While Yamada got her start on B&B as a designer interning at Forrester Creations, that’s a different world than the one she stepped into with Elle. Particularly because of the real-life iconic fashion houses whose clothing is worn in the show.
She shared with Soapy hosts Greg Rikaart (Leo, Days of our Lives; Kevin, The Young and the Restless) and Rebecca Budig (Taylor, B&B) that the series “[has] one of the best wardrobe departments I’ve ever worked with. I mean just dripping in Hermès and Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci.”
It’s to be expected since the highly anticipated Legally Blonde prequel follows Elle Woods’ high school years. As an adult, the titular character became a lawyer before transitioning to politics; however, the first film opens with Elle as a Fashion Merchandising major in college, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Fashion is a significant aspect of her characterization, as is her background coming from wealth.
From Prison Wear To Rodeo Drive
Like B&B, Elle is set in Los Angeles, but Yamada’s character, Amber, is nothing like Luna. Adopting a Valley Girl accent, the actress succinctly demonstrated the vibe of her role with the line, “Daddy’s Am Ex is going to pay for it.”
She described playing Amber as “a lot of fun” and her time filming as being “completely different from what I do on Bold, so it was refreshing.”
And it certainly would be. Even setting aside Luna’s crimes, she’s a character who had a rough childhood growing up. Her home life with her mother Poppy (Romy Park) wasn’t typical as her mom did drugs, had men in and out of the house, and they were often moving. American Express cards and expensive clothing weren’t a part of the equation.
Amber, who’s Elle’s friend in the show, is the kind of character who goes shopping on Rodeo Drive. So, of course, production had to shut it down so the teens could have a shopping spree. Yamada mentioned that the budget for the series is substantial, and due to the popularity of the films, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding it. Hence, their feature on Deuxmoi, the popular entertainment and celebrity news account.
Yamada also has a movie coming out—I Wish You All the Best. The film is a coming-of-age story about Ben DeBacker, a non-binary teen who moves in with their sister after their parents kick them out. She plays Sophie, a lesbian high school student who befriends Ben.
The B&B star hits the big screen on November 7.
