What Is The San Fernando Valley Brigade?

The San Fernando Valley Brigade is a group of local volunteers dedicated to informing the public about the Trump administration’s controversial and demonstrably harmful policies. Their Instagram bio states: “We stand against fascism by bringing clear, timely, pro-democracy messages to freeway overpasses.”

Four days a week, the brigade and its supporters display signs and banners to 40,000 commuters during rush hour, hence the name ‘Rush Hour Resistance.’ The topics on display range from solidarity with immigrants to denouncing the president and the administration’s actions, and to calls for reform and accountability.

In 2025, the organization’s leader, Alise Ivy, shared with ABC7 Los Angeles why the brigade demonstrates on the 101 freeway overpasses. “We’re their wake-up call,” she said, referring to the motorists. “We do a lot of activism, from phone banking to canvassing to writing postcards. But I really feel like for us, this is the most impactful thing we can do.”

Hollywood Shows Their Support

The McCook family, as well as fellow performers and professionals in the TV & Film industry, will be joining the San Fernando Valley Brigade for Rush Hour Resistance on February 27 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. PT. Laurette Spang-McCook reposted details about the event on Instagram. The actress has been demonstrating with the group on Fridays.

Speaking with Michael Fairman, Spang-McCook shared her experience with the brigade:

As I stood on this bridge the first time and looked around me I saw that most of the group that day was over 70, waving flags, absolutely dedicated to reclaiming the joy and dignity of our country. With Bob Dylan,Pete Seeger, Sam Cooke, Phil Ochs and yes, the Beatles blasting CD player boomboxes. These people knew how to set up a passionate, dead serious movement that reaches out to some 40,000 who pass under that bridge during rush hour.

The response to the organization’s messages has been largely positive. Spang-McCook has seen motorist show their support through horn honking, flashing their lights, and arm waving. There has been dissent as well. However, the middle fingers the actress saw during her first demonstration were few and discrete. No one was hanging out the window to display or voice their disagreement. She said the goal is unity and the hope that if “we stand together, better things are to come.”

Friday’s Rush Hour Resistance is focused on standing up for democracy. Motorists will likely see a bevy of signs about freedom of speech and expression along with the San Fernando Valley Brigade’s ongoing messages decrying ICE raids and showing support for the immigrant communities that call the United States home.
