Darin Brooks Speaks Out on Who’s Funnier – Him or Scott Clifton

Darin Brooks logged a decade of drama on The Bold and the Beautiful as Wyatt Spencer. He recently sat down with Michael Fairman of Michael Fairman TV to reflect on his years at the half-hour soap.

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother

Wyatt had his share of romances on B&B as the show paired him with Steffy, Hope, Ivy, Sally, and Flo (whew!) over the years. However, the relationship that was most enduring and perhaps endearing was his dynamic with his TV brother Liam (Scott Clifton).

Brooks credits Clifton, who was already on the show, with helping him nail the role of Wyatt as the two men screen-tested together. “[Scott] said, ‘You know…you were my choice because you brought a lot of heart to the audition that we were doing,” Brooks recalled. “It was supposed to be a brother coming in and yelling at him but the way I played it was more like when I was yelling at him [because] he was hurting me. I made it about how his actions were affecting me.”

While Liam and Wyatt certainly had their share of drama over the years, the two actors are also known for the verbal sparring and humor they brought to their scenes. If you felt that sometimes Wyatt would have the upper hand and that other times Liam would, well, that’s how the actors wanted you to feel.

“We always talked about scenes…who should ‘win’ what scene and who shouldn’t,” Brooks revealed. “We [would] have sort of an arc in each episode…we had this kind of unspoken word — whatever was happening in the scene, somebody was gonna be like a winner or a loser; someone gets the last joke in or gets to rub the other guy the wrong way.”

Acknowledging that sometimes fellow actors aren’t always generous with who gets to “win” the scene, Brooks says he and Clifton split the victories. “[We] would always play that dance and be like, ‘Okay, you win this one and then, I’ll win the next one…we had a nice brotherly repartee.”

Fairman offered to Brooks that he is actually the funnier brother, prompting Brooks to playfully chastise, “Michael! How dare you?” Then, humbly admitting, “I think I can make people laugh. Scott’s funny, too, Man, we have a great time.”
