When Katherine Kelly Lang began working on The Bold and the Beautiful as Brooke Logan in 1987, she had the benefit of being surrounded by veteran actors such as John McCook, Susan Flannery, and other performers, all of whom could pass along set etiquette and other helpful advice. Now Lang is paying the lessons she learned forward, especially as they apply to today’s TV industry.
Last spring, the Daytime Emmy nominee and long-running BB cast member took part in the AEG Live Soiree Film & TV Festival, which is described as a three-day series of networking events, workshops, pop-up events, and more, all designed to aid aspiring showbiz newcomers on how to get ahead in the TV and film industries.
Lang’s advice can be summed up as such: “Don’t be a bitch.”
“It’s all about showing up, knowing your lines, hitting your mark, having a good attitude, and doing the job well,” Lang shared with festival attendees. “And of course, [having] some talent. There has to be some talent in there somewhere.”
There was a time when folks would simply look the other way if there were forms of harassment or abuse (verbal and even physical) taking place. Now people aren’t getting away with that. “People don’t realize you can’t have an attitude especially nowadays,” Lang shared at the festival. “Nobody puts up with that. Hollywood does not put up with that.
“You can’t be a diva,” the actress added. “You can’t demand things, because they will just fire you.” In today’s world especially, actors need to show up prepared and ready to follow all directions… including COVID-19 protocols.
Once being a decent human being is on your checklist, Lang advises to come in and give it your all. “You want to do the best job you can,” she says. “You want to be loving and supportive to everyone around. And be helpful and do 100% or [even] 110% of what you’re hired to do.” The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
