The 46th Annual Daytime Emmy pre-nominations in the acting categories have been announced. While The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) scored some well-deserved nods, more than a few standout performances from the half-hour sudser were not acknowledged by voters.
Scott Clifton (Liam), who won last year’s statuette for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and who already has next year’s reel in the can, was pre-nominated for his work in 2017. Also, pre-nominated in this category is John McCook (Eric), whose romance with Quinn has kept his character viable and on the front-burner.
In the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) earned a pre-nomination. Her onscreen ex-husband Darin Brooks (Wyatt), a previous winner for his role as Max on Days of Our Lives, earned a pre-nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category.
B&B is also represented in the Outstanding Younger Actress and Actor in a Drama Series categories with respective nods for Reign Edwards (Nicole), Courtney Grosbeck (Coco), Rome Flynn (ex-Zende), Pierson Fodé (ex-Thomas), and Anthony Turpel (RJ).
However, a lot of B&B powerhouses are oddly absent. What will it take for Don Diamont (Bill) to earn a pre-nom? His role as antagonist Bill Spencer drives a lot of story. He’s a man who is a force to be reckoned with.
Likewise, two of his leading ladies — Heather Tom (Katie), who has five Daytime Emmys on her mantel, and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), who gave a tour-de-force when she learned of Bill’s role in blowing up Spectra and Ridge’s infidelity, each had a solid year.
When B&B premiered, there were a dozen soaps on the canvas competing for Emmy slots. The show broke into the race when Darlene Conley earned a Supporting Actress nod in 1990 for her powerhouse portrayal of Sally Spectra.
And speaking of Sally Spectra, where was Courtney Hope (Sally) on the ballot? She gave one fabulous performance after another as the scrappy namesake of a beloved character. Hope had viewers rooting for Sally throughout her romance with Thomas and her subsequent flirtation with Liam.
Also absent from the ballot are Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), Rena Sofer (Quinn), and Kimberlin Brown (Sheila).
This pre-nomination ballot is filled with many deserving nominees, but, as usual, there are some head-scratching omissions. This year, B&B seems to have more of those than other shows.
The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for airtimes,
