The Bold and the Beautiful recap for January 13-17, 2020 features more of the same shenanigans that have been going on for weeks, months, and even years. But there’s a very important reason behind that…

The Bold and the Beautiful Recap Highlights

BB is the kind of soap opera in which history is consistently repeating itself because the characters are either too stupid or too self-absorbed to learn from their past errors.

So, with that fact in mind, it makes perfect sense that Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) are still on the outs and that “The Dressmaker” is being pursued by another woman.

Always Ridge

That very concept is apart of the show’s DNA. When Ridge was with Caroline (Joanna Johnson) he wanted Brooke. When he got Brooke he wanted Taylor (Hunter Tylo). Then when he had her he wanted anybody else.

At least this time around he was honest about all the adulterous smooches he shared with a woman who wasn’t his wife. And, in keeping with storied tradition, Brooke decided to assign little blame to her errant husband and instead lay most of it at his paramour’s feet — and slap her!

Slightly Younger, Still Reliving The Same Story’s

The concept of a repetitive narrative also serves to explain the roundabout love affairs amongst the soap younger crowd. For the past decade or so, BB’s very life’s blood has been made up of the Steffy/Liam/Hope triangle.

Therefore, it only makes sense that Hope (Annika Noelle) and Liam (Scott Clifton) are currently on the outs and a reluctantly-scheming Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) is making a play for her ex. And it also makes total sense that Wyatt (Darin Brooks) is once again jostling between Flo (Katrina Bowden) and Sally (Courtney Hope)

He has never worked as a proper, delineated character. In fact, Wyatt is only at his best when he’s playing one-third of a triangle; Wyatt/Hope/Liam and Wyatt/Katie/Bill being the primary examples.

BB Musings

Sally: “Now you’re saying that I might get the boot because my designs are just a little off?” It seems to be where this is heading Sally. But judging by your hand tremors it also seems like your about to experience another tired and true BB trope – give the young heroine a potentially-fatal disease. Hey, it “worked” out for Caroline Spencer — Senior and Junior — and Felicia Forrester (Lesli Kay). You’ll be fine!

Ridge: [to Steffy] “It was just a kiss, right? You didn’t mean for that to happen, did you?” Good lord Ridge, will you ever get something? Ridge: [To Brooke] “Thomas had NOTHING to do with this kiss!” Oh, well it seems you decided to provide an answer to the question after all.

Shauna (Denise Richards): [to Flo] “Don’t give up on Wyatt. And I am sure Quinn would tell you the same thing.” Nah, we’re pretty sure Quinn’s (Rena Sofer) advice would be to either threaten his life with a sword or render him an amnesiac and then hold him hostage in a cabin until he fell in love with you. Or seduce the man he spent decades believing was his biological son.

Felony Flo? Slut From the Desert? Really Brooke? Guess all those years you spent being read for filth by your mother-in-law really did a number on your psyche, huh?

And thank goodness that Quinn was around to remind you that not only were you and Stephanie not besties but that, “She [Stephanie] tried to get rid of you for years and years.”

Speaking of Quinn, has she — or the series — ever had a better line than, “Stephanie taught you how to slap? Bitch, you should have learned that from me!”

Also, can someone, anyone remind the writers and producers that the whole “portrait above the fireplace” shtick is something that started in the very late 2000s and that it didn’t ring true then and certainly does not do so now?

These are grown adults arguing over a picture and its location. Enough is definitely enough. The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
