The Bold and the Beautiful has been so popular around the world, some actors have needed bodyguards while traveling. Take Greece, for example. In the show’s early years, the stars were so popular, Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), Ronn Moss (ex-Ridge), and Joanna Johnson (ex-Caroline/Karen) needed protection from their throngs overseas.
But it looks like their reign over all others may be coming to an end if what’s going on in South Africa is any indication. According to tvPlus Magazine’s Facebook page (see below), it looks like the half-hour soap may be canceled this spring.
“SABC3 has pulled the plug on long time soapie The Bold And The Beautiful. The last air date for the soapie is Friday 1 March.”
SABC has been airing the soap for the entire 30-year run, though it did switch from SABC 1 to SABC3 in 2013, according to Channel 24.
As for the reason for the possible cancelation, “The management of the channel decided to cancel or discontinue Bold due to the investment performance in the slot which does not make business to continue with such a property on the schedule, hence the cancellation.”
We say “possible” because it looks like the decision isn’t necessarily set in stone. SABC 3’s publicity coordinator Doulha Domingo told Channel 24 that they are still in talks.
“The ultimate decision will not come from the channel but from SABC cooperate and we will keep our viewers updated on the process as it continues,” she told Channel 24.
Will this have ramifications for the show around the world? So far, it seems to be just happening in one place but Soap Hub will continue to monitor the situation.
In the meantime, the show remains strong in the U.S., holding its own behind sister soap The Young and the Restless but it has had General Hospital and Days of Our Lives nipping at its heels.
The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
