Rick And Michonne Are Giving Soap Opera Supercouple In The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Primetime has found its soap supercouple.

 Comments

Of all The Walking Dead spin-offs, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has arguably been the most anticipated by its fans. Why? Because it stars a TWD supercouple.

What’s It About?

TOWL – fondly referred to by some simply as “Rick and Michonne” – follows one of the biggest couples in the TWD Universe. A couple since Season 6 of TWD, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) thought they had been through it all together – until Rick sacrificed himself for his community and was presumed dead for five years. But after receiving several hints of her love being alive, Michonne went on a mission to bring their fearless leader home to her, his found family, and his two children.

Cue TOWL, which gives fans a look at what the two went through during their time away. Rick was revealed to have been taken captive by their frenemy Jadis (Pollyanna MacIntosh), working as a CRM soldier in a thriving, secret community that was always one step ahead of his escape plans.

Meanwhile, Michonne went on a journey following the clues to Rick, and made new friends along the way. During their trek, the group was hit by a fatal bomb shot by the CRM, killing everyone but Michonne and her pal Nat (Matthew Jeffers). For a year following the bombing, the two finally garnered the strength to continue on, and that was when they shot down an incoming CRM helicopter that just happened to be flown by Rick.

Rick and Michonne’s reunion was bittersweet and short-lived when Nat was killed and the two had to pretend they didn’t know each other in order to guarantee their safety when Rick’s fellow soldiers showed up.

From then on, Rick and Michonne found each other on opposite ends of the mission despite remaining secret lovers until their thrilling escape when Michonne threw them both out of a helicopter.

Soap Supercouple Vibes

While all of the shows in the TWD Universe are full of action and horror, TOWL has oozed with soapy supercouple vibes and drama typically found on daytime.

Episode 4 in particular, titled “What We,” demonstrates this best when Michonne finally gets Rick alone, and instead of killing zombies (which wasn’t too far-fetched for Days of Our Lives in 2021) or surviving in the apocalypse, the two have it out soap style, tearing into each other for their actions.

The episode later captures the couple during a “love in the nighttime” scene before Rick confides in Michonne about what his time away had really been like in a moment full of tears and shouting and kissing.

Centered around two lovers who would do anything to be together, this show could almost act like a standalone and easily capture the hearts of soap opera lovers.
