Empire, the sexy nighttime soap about the machinations of Lucious Lyon, his ex-wife Cookie and his family has been renewed for a fifth season by Fox!
“Empire is as compelling, emotional and unpredictable as it ever was,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.
“We are so proud of our amazing cast, led by Terrence (Howard, Lucious) and Taraji (P. Hensen, Cookie), who deliver powerful performances week after week.”
Thorn also gave kudos to the show’s producers and creative team for creating “unforgettable, jaw-dropping OMG moments that have always been signature to EMPIRE.”
Empire debuted on Fox on January 7, 2015. The show is set in New York and its backdrop is set in the hip hop music and entertainment world.
Recently, the show has announced that Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker and Emmy and Golden Globe Winner Alfre Woodward were making guest-appearances on the show. Whitaker plays Eddie, a man fighting for his place at Empire Entertainment while Lucious attempts to find a permanent way to keep him out. Meanwhile, Cookie tries to make amends for her past, which leads to a possible future with her long-lost mother (played by Woodard).
Empire’s renewal comes as little surprise. The sudsy drama ranks as one of this year’s top series among Adults 18-49. Henson has received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She won the Gold Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 2016.
In addition to the regular cast, Empire has seen a slew of guest stars including Demi Moore, Taye Diggs, and Phylicia Rashad.
Empire airs Wednesdays on Fox at 8 p.m.
