First Matt Cohen traded in a priest’s collar for a doctor’s stethoscope on General Hospital. Now, he’s turned both of those in for a reporter’s microphone as the newest daytime star turned entertainment reporter/weekend anchor for Entertainment Tonight!
Catching Up With Matt Cohen
Soap Hub ran into Cohen, aka GH’s Dr. Griffin Munro, at a recent red carpet event and chatted the affable actor/director/reporter up about his new gig! Read on for the scoop from the man who now gets the scoop from TV and film’s biggest names!
How are you enjoying your role at Entertainment Tonight?
I love it. The humanity and empathy through having a nice conversation with people is something that we overlook in today’s social media world.
What level was your pop culture knowledge at prior to taking on this role?
Minimal. I have a son [Macklin], who is 4 1/2 so, whenever I’m not acting or directing I am spending time with him. I hadn’t been watching a lot of TV.
Your TV and movie watching from childhood must be coming in handy?
Yes. Like [when I interviewed] the cast of [BH] 90210. I watched that show as a boy. Things like that come up. I also enjoy learning about people I don’t know a lot about. It’s fun getting to learn more about this business.
Some actors prefer having a script to being on TV as themselves. You see at home doing both.
Yeah. I feel nerves here as I do with acting, but I don’t feel any nerves are ever strong enough to stop me from doing what I want to do. This is exciting. I feel something about what I’m doing. I try to show that I’m invested in the conversations I have. I love it.
What have been your most recent memorable interviews?
I interviewed Henry Winkler (Happy Days; Barry) [when he was honored by the Paley Media Center]. He shared some very meaningful stories.
It was nice to see you pop up on GH a while ago.
Thank you. I hope to pop up whenever Frank [Valentini, executive producer] rings the phone. We have a great relationship. I was honored that he allows [Griffin] to live on and drop by.
How’s your wife, Mandy Musgrave (ex-Chelsea, Days of Our Lives) doing?
She’s doing fantastic. I shot a short concept with her. It’s called Mama Bear and we’re in the process of selling it. Fingers crossed we get some traction with it later this year.
Cohen can be seen as a correspondent on Entertainment Tonight and is the program’s weekend co-anchor. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
