In what might seem like something of a real-life soap opera, Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, has been missing in action recently, and inquiring minds want to know what’s going on with her. The Princess of Wales was recently hospitalized and discharged from a hospital following abdominal surgery. However, her husband backing out of appearances has left many wondering about the true state of Middleton’s health.
Patients on TV shows often rebound fairly quickly from surgery — but in real life, it’s not so easy. Middleton remained in the hospital for two weeks before moving home to recover from surgery. The Royals are known for making personal appearances for charity, but Middleton is set to take a break from such appearances until after Easter, which is set for March 31 this year.
Curiosity grew over Middleton’s health after Prince William withdrew from a memorial service set to honor his late grandfather earlier this week. A palace source tells PEOPLE that Middleton “continues to be doing well,” following her surgery (which is reported to be non-cancerous).
“It is sensible to take the time,” a source told PEOPLE about Middleton’s recovery. “That is a great example to the rest of us, as you’re often told to get back to work as soon as possible, which can be damaging. It is good for all of us to see her taking the time, recovering properly, and then coming back. We can all learn from that.”
According to the University of Utah Health, it can take one to two months to recover from abdominal surgery.
