Esther Valentine knew better than to tell any fibs around her late boss Katherine Chancellor, but her portrayer, Kate Linder, is helping tell A Little White Lie on the big screen. The actress chatted with Soap Hub about her new role.

Kate Linder Tells A Little White Lie

A Little White Lie, written and directed by Michael Maren, is based on the book by Chris Belden. The film tells the story of Kate Hudson’s (Almost Famous) character, who extends an invitation to Shriver, who is played by Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), a down-on-his-luck handyman who has never read a book in his life, to attend a literary festival at a college. Hudson’s character mistakes Shriver for a famous writer who’s been in hiding.

“I play the college president, who doesn’t take no for an answer,” Linder tells Soap Hub. “My character wants things to go right.

“It was great fun to play this role,” the Y&R performer says. “She’s 180 degrees away from Esther.” Linder shared many scenes with Hudson and says she also enjoyed working with Shannon. “He’s kind and giving, really great. I loved watching him. He’s really, really good.”

Age Is Just a Number

Originally, the film was set to be completed back in 2020, but the pandemic shut down production in March 2020. “I had just one day left,” Linder recalls. “It’s mind-boggling to me that they were able to get everyone back. We finished it in 2022, so it was like two years.

“Everyone looked the same,” Linder chuckles. “I don’t know how they did that. You can’t tell some of it was shot two years ago. [The director and producers] did a really great job.”

The film also stars Don Johnson (Miami Vice). “He is such a character, so funny,” Linder shares. “I just loved watching what he was doing whether he was working or not. He’s a lot of fun.”

Does Linder think that it’s okay to tell harmless lies in real life? “I don’t know that my character would agree with that,” she says. “[But] as long as people aren’t hurt, and they look out for each other [it’s okay]. My character needs to answer to a board of directors when they ask, ‘Why did you lose money?’ Everyone always has to answer to someone.”

A Little White Lie can be seen in theaters and on Digital and On Demand.
