Adam Huss Talks Stepping In for Marcus Coloma as Nikolas on GH

General Hospital once again tapped actor Adam Huss to sub for Marcus Coloma on General Hospital as Nikolas Cassadine after Coloma needed off for a few days. The actor spoke with Soap Hub about it.

“I’d just finished filming a rom-com and was available,” Huss shares with Soap Hub, so the actor gave a hearty “Hell, ya!” when GH casting director Mark Teschner reached out to the actor’s reps to see if he’d be available after Coloma needed some time off. (The actor revealed in an Instagram post that he’d come down with COVID.)

“Mark’s been so wonderful,” Huss says. Soon after being contacted, the actor had scripts in front of him that called for Nikolas to interact with estranged wife Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West), whom he acted with the first time he played Nikolas, calculating Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl), and Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber Baldwin).

“It was 65 pages over four days!” Huss exclaims, who credits his three co-stars and a pal with helping him rise to the challenge of learning so much dialogue in such a short amount of time. “I know that I needed to be ‘off book’ so I could do the best job possible with the material. I have this amazing friend/coach Joey Isabel, who was available to help me run the lines on FaceTime and over Zoom.

“Maura’s just fantastic,” Huss adds. “She’s talented, kind, and a consummate professional. Avery asked Mark to get her my number so we could run the lines. She made me feel at ease. Rebecca ran lines with me, too. She’s been on the show for 25 years and is so generous. I followed Liz’s romance with Lucky [Spencer, Jonathan Jackson] and Nikolas. I love all three of those women. They were so gracious with me.”

Huss’s ears might have been burning last month when Kimberlin Brown (Sheila Carter) was honored for her 30-year run on The Bold and the Beautiful. The show listed Sheila’s wicked ways, including her letting killer bees loose on Lance, Huss’s character, who was allergic to bee stings! “That comes up on the Internet every so often,” Huss chuckles. “Kimberlin taught me the art of learning lines quickly and then, stuffing your script behind cushions [on] set. She’s another brilliant daytime actress I got to work with.”

Viewers who want to see more of Huss can check him out in some upcoming scripted projects. He is starring in and/or producing Let it Kill You and Original True. “I also have Love is in the Air, which is the rom-com I just filmed which will be coming out next year, and Namaste Bitches is a show I’m in that just dropped [yesterday]. It first dropped in 2014 but since got additional funding. I play Dr. Sam, who maybe doesn’t give the best advice to the lead protagonist. It’s a very fun, comedic role.”

As Huss was wrapping up his visit to GH, he actually encountered Coloma, who was back at the studio. “I met Marcus on the last day that I shot,” says Huss, who says any apprehension he may have been feeling was totally unfounded. “He couldn’t have been nicer. We met in the hallway and at lunch and just chatted. There was a lovely comradery, a mutual admiration, and a nice respect for one another. It was really cool.”
