“What are you doing with him?” Seth grabbed Lauren by the arm and pulled her away from where she and her tennis-team friends were sitting around a trio of pushed together cafeteria tables, celebrating their win over arch-rival, UC Berkeley.

“Who?” Lauren asked, wriggling out of Seth’s grasp and rubbing her elbow, more out of embarrassment than because he’d actually hurt her.

“Him,” Seth jerked his chin in the direction of one Steven Erikson. Even though, ostensibly, this was a group gathering, anyone above legal blindness could see that Lauren and Steven were together.

She’d met him at the annual “Screw Your Roommate” party prior to Thanksgiving. Stanford freshman tradition dictated bringing someone you thought your roommate would like. Steven had come with somebody else and was meant for somebody else. But Lauren had noticed him. She’d watched him play tennis in the past, back when she’d just had ambitions of making the team. She thought he was really good.

Now, she still thought he was really good. And really cute. Tall and slender, but muscular, with blond hair that flopped just above his shirt collar, blue eyes, alabaster skin perennially pink from the sun and the exertion of playing high-level college tennis, plus the most adorable habit of sternly lecturing himself while he was playing, as if providing his own pep talks.

They’d barely crossed paths at the party except to say “Hey,” and “Don’t I know you from the…” and “Yeah, I’m new this year.” But then, right after Christmas, Lauren had gotten up the nerve to ask Steven if he would mind hitting a few balls with her – she knew he was so much better, and it probably wouldn’t be any fun for him, but she could really use the practice. He’d shrugged and picked up his racket. And everything went from there.

They had their first official date on Valentine’s Day, which Lauren said she knew was totally corny, but Steven said he didn’t mind. Steven, as she would go on to find out, didn’t mind much of anything. He was happy to let Lauren pick where they ate, what movies they saw, and where they should go on the weekends. There really was only one issue on which they didn’t see eye to eye. But Lauren told herself it didn’t matter.

Though it clearly did to Seth.

“Stay from Steven Erikson,” he advised.

“It’s none of your business.”

“Are you sleeping with him?”
