I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar: How Do Independent Women Rate On Soaps?

In the real world, many women live their lives on their own, on their own terms, and it’s actually FULFILLING… but can a woman do that on a soap? Do we want her to?

Of course, independent doesn’t necessarily mean she has to be alone. There are some great examples of women on soaps who fit this description like Carly (Laura Wright) on General Hospital, Eve (Kassie DePaiva) on Days of Our Lives, Quinn (Rena Sofer) on The Bold and the Beautiful, and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) on The Young and the Restless.

Soaps do have their share of co-dependent women, who seem to only go from man to man and they can’t imagine surviving on their own with him. But they’re becoming fewer and more far between in this day and age.

How do you feel about a woman making it on her own–and thriving–on soaps. Soap Hub asked if you like independent daytime women and here’s what you had to say.

Bring it on, 53% said yes — you love independent women on soaps. You know that times have changed and watching the little woman in the kitchen may not create the best drama.

Strong women are sexy and they should be able to drive story just as well as men and sometimes even better!

Bring On The Romance
For 46%, you seem to think that a strong woman means you can’t have romance and frankly romance is why you watch soaps.

You love men like Jason (Steve Burton) on GH as he swoops in to rescue the woman he loves. While Y&R’s Victor (Eric Braeden) seems very old school — but you love him anyway.

Both Sides Now
The remaining 1% say you want to have your cake and eat it too — how hard is it to have romance AND a strong woman? You don’t think it’s too much to ask for and that’s what you want. Luckily, it seems like more soaps are doing just that!
