Daytime Emmy winners are never decided based on an entire year’s worth of work, but instead chosen scenes from performers and only two hours worth of episodes from the shows themselves.
It’s clearly a big decision what each actor, actress, and soap wants to highlight as everything hinges upon what the judges see.
However, from knowing which episodes each soap submitted, it gives Soap Hub something to work with to predict 2017’s Outstanding Daytime Drama winner. Maybe we’re right, maybe we’re wrong. Read on to see if you agree.
Days of Our Lives
Days of Our Lives (DOOL) submitted episodes from what we feel was its best story of the year–and its worst, so it might make it hard to take home an Emmy.
The 51-year-old soap took us on an odd journey last year when we finally learned who John’s (Drake Hogestyn) real parents are (we think–this can always change cause it frequently does).
John’s father ended up being a man who disappeared during the 1950s Korean war, joined an underground terrorist network, and changed his name to Yo Ling.
DAYS submitted the bizarre episode where Yo Ling nearly kills John and Paul, but instead drinks poison resulting in his own death.
However, the soap also submitted the chilling episode in which Abigail (then-Kate Mansi) finds Batty Ben (Robert Scott Wilson) in her home carrying Thomas in his arms, which resulted in her complete mental breakdown.
It was a gripping episode and we almost wish DAYS had used the one that followed with Abby tricking Ben into the bed and setting him on fire.
General Hospital
General Hospital did use episodes from one umbrella story last year that used Julian (William deVry) and Alexis’s (Nancy Lee Grahn) wedding as a backdrop for mob drama, two shootings, one near-drowning, and a mental breakdown.
Hostages were held in the church, Sonny (Maurice Benard) revealed he could walk, Nathan (Ryan Paevey) took a bullet in the church, Kiki (Hayley Erin) took a bullet on the docks, and Morgan (Bryan Craig) lost his mind.
There was plenty of action, plenty of drama, and a plethora of outstanding performances, but will mob land do it for GH? Perhaps the followup episodes of Morgan attempting suicide and the aftermath with his family would have been a better choice.
The Bold and the Beautiful
The Bold and the Beautiful submitted four episodes rather than two, because it’s only 30 minutes long, and the soap chose its summer Monte Carlo sequence to showcase several stories.
We had Liam (Scott Clifton) meeting with actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr., Quinn on an economy class plane ride from hell, Eric (John McCook) longing for Quinn, and then Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) learning her grandfather and arch enemy Quinn (Rena Sofer) were an item.
These shows had a little bit of everything, especially scenic beauty, but we’re not sure it will help B&B pick up an Emmy.

The Young and the Restless went for its most dramatic and heartbreaking show of the year (which was its 11,000th episode) when Adam (Justin Hartley) was killed in that cabin explosion–thanks to Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson).
As Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) waited for her husband to show at an airfield, she had no idea what happened to her husband–all because of her best friend.
Y&R also submitted its New Year’s Eve episode when Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Chelsea thought of becoming more than just friends, Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) chose to move on with her life, and Hilary’s dirty tricks came to light–with Devon finally realizing who (and what) he married.
While each soap submitted fine work, we are going to go with The Young and the Restless as this year’s winner. Adam’s death changed the show forever, and the hour was preceded by a compilation of actor’s favorite moments.
The soap highlighted all its best points, and in the end, that’s what brings home the Emmy gold.
