In 2010, CBS Daytime replaced beloved serial As the World Turns with daily talk show, The Talk. Now, ironically, there’s a published report that The Talk itself might be replaced by a new soap opera in development, Beyond The Gates.
Deadline speculates that Beyond The Gates, if it winds up on CBS (and not a streaming or other part within Paramount’s many divisions), could potentially take the time slot that’s being held by The Talk. Beyond The Gates is being developed by former The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital writer Michele Val Jean, whose other credits include Generations and Ambitions.
However, there’s no official word yet on how long each episode of The Gates will be (it could be 30 minutes in length or an hour show). Deadline speculates that the recent four-year pickup for The Young and the Restless makes it unlikely that Beyond The Gates would replace that show. B&B is the No. 2 ranked show in daytime and is good through the fall of 2025.
Let’s Make A Deal and The Price is Right aren’t likely candidates for cancellation with CBS Daytime either given that they have reasonable budgets and also provide nighttime specials for CBS. While that leaves The Talk as a potential candidate, that show is a great promotional tool for CBS. The show often invites on prime-time stars such as Justin Hartley (ex-Adam, Y&R) and Shemar Moore (Malcolm, Y&R) to promote their nighttime series. The Talk also has on stars from CBS’s Y&R and B&B. In 2021, The Talk hosted the 2nd Annual Soap Hub Awards.
This season of The Talk brought on a new executive producer, Rob Crabbe, who had helmed The Late Late Show with James Corden. He’s made some changes to the show, including reducing the number of hosts who do interviews. It stands to reason that CBS would give Crabbe more time to make changes to bring the show’s ratings up. Also, Beyond The Gates is a show that’s in development. It has yet to receive a deal to go into production.
Soap Hub reached out to The Talk for comment. The Talk airs daily on CBS at 2 p.m. ET and 1 p.m. PT. Check local listings for channels and times in your market.
