It’s prestigious to win one award at the Daytime Emmys, but some talented players have multiple statuettes! One actor is unique in that he earned back to back awards in different categories!
John Wesley Shipp, known to prime-time viewers as Jay Garrick on The Flash, earned his first Daytime Emmy in 1986 for his role as As the World Turns‘ Douglas Cummings, a nice guy on the outside, but a tortured soul on the inside!
As a bonus, Shipp was presented his award by two former ATWT co-stars Martha Byrne (Lily) and Brian Bloom (Dusty)!
Shipp’s character was killed off on ATWT so he wasn’t eligible to win for that role the following year, but that didn’t stop him from taking home a golden bookend!
In 1987, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences added a new category Outstanding Guest Performer In A Drama Series.
The category included movie star Celeste Holm for her work on Loving, and Broadway star Terrence Mann for his role as Jester on As the World Turns.
Shipp was also nominated for his role as Martin Ellis, an abusive tennis pro on Santa Barbara.
Presenters Linda Dano (Felicia, Another World) and Larry Gates (H.B., Guiding Light) read the nominees and announced Shipp as the winner!
The guest performer category went away for a long time, but in recent years it’s returned to the show’s program.
