It’s been happening since the dawn of soap opera – boy meets girl, boy meets another girl or vice versa – and then decisions, decisions, decisions!
Soaps are supposed to be about romance. But as everyone knows, a happy couple can quickly become a boring couple. The easiest way to spice things up has been the eternal soap triangle – adding another lover to the mix. But it’s often met with mixed results.
After all, fans fall in love with a couple and want to see them happy. Think Chad (Billy Flynn) and Abby (Marci Miller) on Days of Our Lives and Drew (Billy Miller) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) on General Hospital.
Each couple fights through so much to be together – now Stefan (Tyler Christopher) and Jason (Steve Burton), respectively, threaten that happiness and their fan bases are going crazy.
Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) on The Young and the Restless and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) on The Bold and the Beautiful have had so many triangles over their decades together, their fans can’t even be shocked anymore.
So, which is it? Do fans enjoy the triangles or are they sick of them? Soap Hub posed just that question to fans and here are those results.
Two Hearts
After over 7,500 votes were tallied, 71% claimed to be tired of soap triangles. You find it to be a cliché in need of retirement. Plenty of couples endure other things and fight through it together. Another person vying for one side of the couple isn’t necessary for drama, you insist.
Three Is The Magic Number
Still, 29% love the thrill of a torn heart, unable to decide who the right person is to love. Other stories just don’t pack the same punch and you want drama during your love in the afternoon! Bring on love, more love, and even more of it!
