The Writers Guild of America Strike Possibility Bad News for Soaps

It looks like a Writers Guild of America may be preparing to strike, and that doesn’t bode well for soaps which had a rather dismal February sweeps month due in part to so many news interruptions.

According to a Soap Central report, the chances of the WGA reaching an agreement look poor at this time making a strike appear imminent. The last time this happened from 2007-2008, it was disastrous for daytime.

The consensus among many writers is that TV is experiencing a golden age, but the rewards aren’t being passed down to the people who create the stories. In fact, some writers believe that the companies can afford to pay more and that they should pay more.

Both TV writers and film screenwriters have seen wages decrease over the last one to two decades, and while they don’t want to strike, they’re afraid that’s where things may be headed if they can’t arrive at an agreement they feel is fair.

Things could get tense as the WGA begins negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Monday, March 13. While soap writers aren’t necessarily the ones feeling a major income loss, they’ll still be involved, and any stoppage of work could seriously cause issues with General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful.
