Some of the most historic moments in soap opera history have occurred on both The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Now, the studio that houses both CBS soaps has received a huge honor!
Last month, CBS Television City, home to both serials, was designated an Historic Cultural Monument by the Los Angeles City Council.
It all began when CBS Television City, which was designed by architect William Pereira, opened its doors in 1952.
Over the decades, the studio has been home to many of television’s most memorable programs including The Carol Burnett Show, All in the Family, The Price Is Right, Three’s Company, American Idol, and Dancing With the Stars!
The Young and the Restless opened up shop at CBS Television City in 1973 and The Bold and the Beautiful has called CBS home ever since its 1987 debut.
According to Larchmont Buzz, the designation was made “in advance of a possible sale of the property, which fans of the buildings believed could lead to its demolition and eventual redevelopment.”
After the designation, City Council Member David Ryu said in a statement: “Today, we were able to preserve a piece of Los Angeles history and a vital part of our local economy,. CBS Television City doesn’t just house a storied past, but working sound stages that are crucial to our local economy.”
Ryu’s statement also included: “Keeping Television City’s sound stages intact keeps Los Angeles jobs intact. This is an example of how saving Los Angeles’ history secures Los Angeles’ future.”
While receiving official landmark status won’t keep CBS from redevelopment it does help assure that a “design review process” would be conducted if and when a redevelopment proposal is put forth.
