Soaps are about love and family and tradition. So are major American holidays. But just like things can get a little heated around your holiday table, with old grudges rising alongside the cornbread stuffing, and long-held secrets coming out after one too many glasses of festive egg-nog, so it is on the soaps.
After all, for some families, a ruined Thanksgiving IS the tradition. (See the Quartermaines of General Hospital and their endless pizza feasts. Not that there enough Quartermaines left in Port Charles to finish off a single pie these days.)
Do you prefer your soap-opera holidays serene or full of strife? Here’s what over 10,000 viewers who consider themselves part of the family had to say:
We Gather Together…
You need drama in your daytime. But 78% of you are also grateful for the periodic break.
And the holidays are an excellent time to do it. You like The Bold and the Beautiful’s (BB) tradition of saying something complimentary about the person sitting next to you. And you appreciate Abbotts and Newmans putting aside their differences for a single meal on The Young and the Restless (YR).
They know it’s a temporary truce. You know it’s a temporary truce. But we can still all pretend. Together….
No Rest For the Weary
Is there anything more boring than watching a bunch of people sitting around, chewing politely? If you wanted that, you’d watch cooking shows (though not the ones with the mean, back-stabbing chefs).
Holidays on soaps should be about getting people who otherwise wouldn’t push each other out of the path of an oncoming car – and letting them at each other, cheer a blood-thirsty 21%.
You want to see the two Jasons of GH break bread – and maybe each other’s limbs. And you know the DiMeras of Days Of Our Lives (DOOL) can never get through a civilized meal. Thanksgiving is no exception!
