Fans love soap operas for a magnitude of reasons. Committed to their stories, fans often tune in five days a week, every week for decades — or they record them and binge watch every weekend or two.
There’s something that keeps viewers coming back day after day, week after week, year after year. Soap Hub asked fans what they like the most about soaps, and the stunning results are in!
Family Time
The core families are the “why” for 54% of you. Originally, The Young and the Restless (YR) featured the wealthy Brooks and the working class Fosters. Today, the only remaining regular who had that last name is Jill (Jess Walton).
Meanwhile, Days of Our Lives (DOOL) featured the Horton and Brady families, and those families still exist on the show along with other, newer Salem residents. General Hospital (GH) started with Dr. Steve Hardy and moved from there. The Bold and the Beautiful (BB), a newer soap, still features the show’s core families with others added over its 3 decades of daily drama.
While remnants of all the core families remain in some form on soaps, the storylines certainly feel different these days. It’s almost as if they’ve moved away from the original family focus of the genre’s earlier days.
Love in the Afternoon
Nearly a quarter, 24%, of fans tune into their daytime dramas on a regular basis for the romance that soaps bring. You love the power couples, and truly enjoyed watching thing. Couplings such as Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis), Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) remind viewers of truly exciting times for these popular serials.
Even though plenty of couples fall in love these days, many fans want to know where the long-term happiness is. Is the power couple staple gone in favor of rocky marriages and eventual co-parenting (which also always happened on soaps)? The lack of strong, “forever” couples causes intense longing for decades past.
Love Triangles and Laughs
Another 15% of you enjoy the drama of a good love triangle. You want to see characters find love, but maybe not the forever kind. You know without certain complications that the relationships and storylines would eventually become boring. This sudser staple keeps you coming back for more!
The final 7% really enjoy those funny moments that only soaps can bring. You tune in for the laughs.
