The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has made a shocking decision and decided to revoke a soap star’s Emmy award because of a submission error!
According to Variety, who broke the story, the soap star in question is Patrika Darbo (currently Shirley on The Bold and the Beautiful; ex-Nancy on Days of Our Lives).
She won the award for her role as Mickey Walker on The Bay in the guest performer category.
NATAS decided to do this after an investigation revealed there was an error with the submission. The producers had submitted her work but there were two violations. They weren’t supposed to have scenes from more than one episode and she had actually been on the show previously.
Darbo was notified of the investigation by Gregori Martin, executive producer of The Bay, and later David Michaels, senior vice president from NATAS, informed her of their findings.
“Of course, I felt badly [sic] about it,” Darbo told Variety. “David said he was ready to jump off a bridge.”
While Martin accepted responsibility for the mishap, he wasn’t the only producer to not realize reels couldn’t have scenes from mulitple episodes.
The academy has decided not to award it to another actor when they realized the next one in line, former All My Children and General Hospital actress, Jennifer Bassey’s (for her role as Beverly Newman in Anacostia) submission, had the same issue as Darbo’s with scenes from mulitple episodes.
NATAS started looking into the matter after Michaels received an email from Michael Caruso, a producer for Web series two days before the Creative Arts ceremony (where the majority of the digital awards were awarded). He had observed some possible violations.
Michaels asked if it was something that could wait until the following week. If he had answered differently, they probably wouldn’t have awarded the category.
This decision doesn’t negate Darbo as an Emmy winner. The talented actress previously won a 2016 Primetime Emmy in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category for her role in Acting Dead.
