Soaps’ Top 4 Most Surprising Couples Through the Years

They say that in life opposites attract – and the same can said of couples on soap operas. Good girl meets boy from the wrong side of the tracks – or vice versa – is practically a staple of storytelling on the soaps.

It gets us rooting for them to overcome the odds stacked against them. Here are some of your favorite surprising couplings over the years.

The Young and the Restless
Who would have thought one of the richest and most successful men in the country like Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) would fall for a stripper like Nikki Reed (Melody Thomas Scott)? But, that’s exactly what happened.

He helped transform her into a classy young lady and the two fell in love. Now Nikki seems to do her best to stop other young women from questionable beginnings from getting their hooks into her sons – Dylan and Nick. And by young women, we mean Sharon.

General Hospital
Was there a more improbable couple than Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis)? After all, she was Scotty’s teen bride at the time. She worked at the Campus Disco to help pay their bills while he went to law school (those law books were very expensive!).

Her manager was Luke, who was tied in with the local mob. He was always willing to help Laura and she did care about him – and then that night at the disco everything changed when he raped her.

And yet – they had an incredible love affair that captured the hearts of a nation. Talk about a surprise!

Days of Our Lives
When Steve “Patch” Johnson (Stephen Nichols) came on the Salem scene, he was bad news, a thug doing dirty work for Victor Kiriakis.

Sweet Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans) was a nurse back then, the sister of his former best friend Bo – who was responsible for taking out his eye in a knife fight.

As strange a pairing as they seemed in the beginning, they turned out to be a match made in heaven – with their romance having spanned over 30 years now.

The Bold and the Beautiful
Ridge had an incredible love with Caroline – until she passed away in his arms. So when he ended up romancing and marrying her namesake niece – well, um…hmm.

It’s hard to find the words to describe that pairing. Add to that Ridge’s (Thorsten Kaye) own son Thomas (a bit more age appropriate) slept with Caroline (Linsey Godfrey) and got her pregnant, the pairing got even more odd. Alas, their love was never meant to be.
