Soap Opera Ratings Race: Three Soaps Up, One Soap Down

The soap opera ratings race for the week ending July 7 show three soaps on the rise and a fourth soap falling once again. Perhaps that one soap will get a shot in the arm to boost its numbers starting this week because it seems needed.

Days of Our Lives
Days of Our Lives (DOOL) was the only soap that lost viewers overall. The soap pulled in 2,045,000 viewers overall on average, down 13,000 from both the week before and the year before.

The only place where DAYS made any gains was with women 18-34, where it was up 7,000 from the week before, but still down 38,000 from the year before.

With new head writer Ron Carlivati’s work beginning this week, we expect to see better numbers for at least a little while as lapsed fans return to see if he can pull the soap together.

The Young and the Restless
The Young and the Restless (YR) remained in first place as per usual, garnering 4,458,000 viewers on average overall, up 211,000 from the previous week, but down 208,000 from the previous year.

Y&R also made gains from the week before with women 18-49 and 18-34 but lost ground with women 25-54.

The Bold and the Beautiful
Sister soap The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) maintained its number two spot, pulling in 3,556,000 viewers on average overall, up 157,000 from the previous week, but down 200,000 from the same time last year.

B&B made gains with woman 18-49 and 18-34 from the week before, but like the other three soaps, lost viewers in the female 25-54 demographic.

General Hospital
General Hospital (GH) found itself in third place of four soaps once again, garnering 2,453,000 viewers on average overall, up a relatively slight 21,000 from the week before but a large 134,000 from the year before.

The only female demographic in which GH made gains was with women 18-34, where it was up a mere 3,000 viewers.
