Soap Opera Ratings Race: One Soap On An Upswing!

The soap opera ratings race for the week ending March 17 showed some signs of improvement for our soaps, which have been on a downward spiral since real-life news became as much or more intriguing than reel-life news on January 20. Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come for all.

Days of Our Lives
While Days of Our Lives (DOOL) kept its number four out of four spot, it definitely left the freefall its been in for months, making more gains than its three counterparts. The 51-year-old NBC soap pulled in 2,336,000 viewers on average, up 228,000 from the week before and 102,000 from the year before.

In fact, it was the only soap to gain overall from both the previous week and year. DAYS also made gains from the week before in all three female demos.

The Young and the Restless
The Young and the Restless remained number one, garnering 4,440,000 viewers on average, up 153,000 from the previous week, but down 255,000 from the previous year.

It lost viewers from the week before and year before with women 18-49, tying a previous low in that demo.

The Bold and the Beautiful
The Bold and the Beautiful pulled in 3,544,000 viewers for its usual second place, gaining 119,000 from the week before, but losing 23,000 from the same time last year. With women 18-49 and 18-34, it tied previous lows and made no gains at all in any demographic.

General Hospital
General Hospital remained in third place, garnering 2,745,000 viewers overall, up 145,000 from the previous week and down 103,000 from the previous year. It also placed second with women 18-49, but tied a low with women 18-34.
