Soap Opera Rating Race: A Devastated May Sweeps For All Four Soaps

The soap opera ratings race for the week ending May 19 saw Days of Our Lives (DOOL) dig out of its seemingly bottomless pit for ever-so-slightly better ratings.

Days of Our Lives
However, DAYS still had under 2,000,000 viewers overall, coming in with 1,965,000, up 22,000 from the week before but down a whopping 207,000 from the year before.

DAYS also made gains from the week before only in all three key women’s demographics. Perhaps, Brady’s allegedly dying days has people tuning in to see if a miracle saves him.

General Hospital
General Hospital (GH) also made improvements, garnering 2,376,000 viewers on average overall, up 51,000 from the week before, but still down a considerable 388,000 from the year before.

Like DAYS, the 53-year-old ABC soap also made gains from the previous week in all three female demos.

The Young and the Restless
The number-one-rated The Young and the Restless kept its perch with 4,120,000 viewers overall, down 48,000 from the week before and a staggering 638,000 from the year before.

However, Y&R did make gains from at least the previous week in the key women’s demos.

The Bold and the Beautiful
Sister soap The Bold and the Beautiful pulled in 3,313,000 viewers, down 144,000 from the week before and down a whole 469,000 from the week before.

B&B made gains from the prior week in all women’s demos except females 25-54.

With the gigantic losses for all four soaps from the same time last year–and during May sweeps period–it goes along with the theme of hemorrhaging viewers we’ve seen since January.
