Kyra Sedgwick is best known for starring as Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer, but the actress has also appeared on popular shows such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Ten Days in the Valley. She also got her start on a soap.

Along with her work in television, Sedgwick has been in films such as Something to Talk About, Born on the Fourth of July, Singles, The Game Plan, and The Edge of Seventeen. From where she was born and raised to her career as a director, here are five fast facts about the actress.

Who is Kyra Sedgwick?

Sedgwick was born on August 19 in New York City. She was also raised in the Big Apple and attended Friends Seminary before going to Sarah Lawrence College. However, she ended up transferring to the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a degree in theater.

Soap Beginnings
Sedgwick was just 16 years old when she landed the role of Julia Shearer, the granddaughter of Liz Matthews, on Another World in 1982. She was on the NBC soap until 1983.

Big Winner
Sedgwick has won a number of awards over the course of her career, including one Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series — Drama for her work in The Closer. She has been nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards for that same show and she won in 2010.

Put on Her Director’s Hat

After years of being an actor, Sedgwick started directing fairly recently. She first directed a TV movie called Story of a Girl, which starred both her husband, Kevin Bacon, and her daughter, Sosie Bacon. She has also directed episodes of television shows such as God Friended Me, In The Dark, and City on a Hill, which all aired in 2019.

Getting Personal
Sedgwick married her husband Kevin Bacon on September 4, 1988. They met while starring in the TV movie Lemon Sky together. They have two children, son Travis who was born on June 23, 1989, and daughter Sosie who was born on March 15, 1992. Sedgwick and Bacon live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.
