Fall TV Preview: 6 Daytime Alums Make Waves on CBS Primetime

The primetime broadcast season makes a comeback this fall with new and returning series — some of which feature soap alums. For example, CBS is rolling out shows where everyone from leads to supporting characters to guest stars once caused a splash in the daytime realm on shows like Days of Our Lives, Passions, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, All My Children, and As the World Turns.

6 Daytime Alums on CBS Primetime

#1 Shemar Moore, S.W.A.T. (Season 8 Premiere, Friday, October 18 @ 8PM ET)

Soap Character: Malcolm Winters
Soap Opera: The Young and the Restless

Only former Shemar Moore could lead a show that gets canceled and then uncanceled. Ultimately, CBS couldn’t eliminate an intense cop drama that consistently brought viewers to its Friday night lineup. So Moore will be back playing Hondo, the leader of the 20-squad, for a 22-episode eighth season.

In the season eight premiere, look for Hondo to tackle a case that hits close to home. It involves his former high school football coach.

#2 Annie Ilonzeh, S.W.A.T. (Season 8 Premiere, Friday, October 18 @ 8PM ET)

Soap Character: Maya Ward
Soap Opera: General Hospital

Turnover has been an issue on Hondo’s S.W.A.T. team before. So, in season eight, it’s no surprise to learn that there’s a new addition. Joining the 20-squad is Annie Ilonzeh’s character, Devin Gamble.

According to a CBS press release, Commander Hicks has reservations about this brand-new hire. Maybe it’s because Devin Gamble is a cop with a family background deeply entrenched in crime.

#3 Justin Hartley, Tracker (Season 2 Premiere, Sunday, October 13 @ 8PM ET)

Soap Characters: Fox Crane & Adam Newman
Soap Operas: Passions & Y&R

Let’s just say that Justin Hartley’s post-soap career has been magical. First, he starred in the soapy ensemble drama This is Us. He’s followed up on that critically acclaimed series with Tracker, another primetime show that should have a long shelf life. It only became the most-watched new series of the 2023-2024 season.

Now it’s time for the all-important second season. In the premiere, his character, Colter Shaw, investigates the disappearance of a missing family whose car was found abandoned on the side of the road in the backwoods of Arkansas. Hartley’s wife, Y&R Alum Sofia Pernas, will return as a guest star this season as well.

#4 Jensen Ackles, Tracker (Season 2 Episode 2, Sunday, October 20 @ 8PM ET)

Soap Character: Eric Brady
Soap Opera: Days of Our Lives

It’s difficult to keep up with Jensen Ackles’s career lately. He’s currently in production on the new Prime Video series Countdown. He’ll stick with that streaming platform when he returns as Soldier Boy on The Boys for its fifth and final season. Then he spins off Soldier Boy for a new series called Vought Rising.

Ackles will also somehow manage to fit in guest appearances on Tracker, where he plays Colter Shaw’s older brother, Russell. When Russell returns in the second episode of season two, he’ll apparently get the opportunity to be even more heroic than he was in the penultimate episode of season one.

#5 Jesse Lee Soffer, FBI International (Season 4 Premiere, Tuesday, October 15 @ 9PM ET)

Soap Character: Will Munson
Soap Opera: As The World Turns

Jesse Lee Soffer stays loyal to TV Guru Dick Wolf for his latest gig. Previously, he starred in NBC’s Chicago PD but left near the beginning of the tenth season. However, the sometime director is back and making his debut over on the FBI branch of Wolf’s entertainment family tree.

In FBI International, Soffer will play Supervisory Special Agent Wesley “Wes” Mitchell. Yes, he’s the new boss replacing Luke Kreintank’s Supervisory Special Agent, Scott Forrester. And in the season four premiere, The Fly Team meets up with Soffer’s character after his partner was shot and the suspects flee to Budapest.

#6 Leven Rambin, Fire Country (Season 3 Premiere, Friday, October 18 @ 9PM ET)

Soap Character: Lily Montgomery
Soap Opera: All My Children

According to TV Line, Leven Rambin will appear as a recurring guest star on CBS’s Fire Country during its upcoming third season. She will play Audrey James, a former fire camp inmate.

Apparently, “Audrey presents with the grit and tenacity that her tattoos and prison record imply.” However, she ends up revealing the “soulful spirit of a gifted musician and empath.”
