The Edge of Night was known as the mystery soap, but it also had its share of romance. Sharon Gabet, who played Raven, shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at a hot moment that almost went terribly wrong in the new book, Super Soap Scenes: A Time Capsule of Daytime Drama’s Greatest Moments.
Twice the Love
After Larkin (Malloy’s) character, Jeff Brown, got killed off, Edge decided to bring him back a month or so later as the real Sky. We were just beginning the new story when Larkin was struck by a hit-and-run driver in New York and was hospitalized with serious injuries. He returned to the set quickly after a couple months of recuperation from a shattered leg, shoulder fracture, and internal injuries. He was in a wheelchair and also used crutches, so they would shoot him either sitting or standing from the waist up. Soaps were used to that since many times they had to shoot pregnant actresses that way when they didn’t want a pregnancy in the storyline.
Falling in Love
We had a scene together in Geraldine’s apartment, which was going to be the first time Sky and Raven kissed since the Jeff Brown/Switzerland story. They were having an intense argument because the real Sky booted Raven out of the Whitney mansion and stripped her of everything the fake Sky had bought for her, including jewelry and furs. We were standing up, facing each other, and Raven slapped him. Larkin was supposed to grab me and kiss me, but I wasn’t thinking and was a bit too far from him, and he couldn’t move with his full leg cast, so he leaned forward and made a wild grab at me with both hands and pulled me to him. It looked quite passionate on camera, and the crew whistled and cheered after the cut. But I had almost made him fall over!
