During the late 1970s and early ’80s, when supercouples ruled and ratings were so high that daytime soaps paid for primetime shows, love-on-the-run stories ruled the day.
Frankly, that’s how your favorite couples usually fell deeper in love: It was the two of them versus the world. Remember General Hospital’s Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) fighting the mob or later the Cassadines with the Ice Princess storyline?
How about when Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Nicole (Arianne Zucker) fled to Canada to keep baby Holly? Nicole couldn’t believe all that Brady had done for her and they fell in love. Well, briefly. (OK, that was more recent.)
What about when on The Young and the Restless, Daniel (Michael Grazadei) ran off with Lily (Christel Khalil) before he could be wrongly arrested for driving under the influence and killing Cassie (Camryn Grimes)? It was a magical time for the young couple, despite the sad circumstances.
That never seemed to be the thing to do for the characters on The Bold and the Beautiful, though they would run off to exotic locations, it was never running from something.
It feels like it’s been a long time since there was a good one on the soaps, but are they missed? Soap Hub asked and here are the results.
Stay Put
A full 63% of you feel that plot device is tired and you prefer that your favorite couples fall in love while staying at home. You may have loved it back in the day, but times have changed and it just doesn’t seem right. Besides, soaps don’t have the money to go on location these days.
Running for Love
Still, 37% completely miss those heightened stories of love conquering all and you’d love to see it again. Perhaps Ciara (Victoria Konefal) and Ben (Robert Scott Wilson) would be a great couple to do that with. After all, Ciara’s parents, Bo and Hope, certainly had their fair share of those stories.
