Love Next Door is a K-drama on Netflix set in contemporary Korea. The two main families are middle class with aspirations. The families have lived next door to each other for many many years. As in many families, their aspirations seem to be put on their children.
Choi Seung-hyo is a quiet boy who became a champion swimmer and award-winning architect. He is either too cool or too shy for girls. Bae Seok-ryu is the take-no-prisoners roughneck girl who became an executive who took on and conquered America only to come back home in the first episode.
We are introduced to all of Bae Seok-ryu’s family. The mother and father run a restaurant together. Her brother is studying to be a personal trainer. We only met Choi Seung-hyo’s mother, so we know nothing of his family except that they lived in another country when he was born. We do know from the ladies’ conversation that he doesn’t send his mother many gifts. We also know that he has an overly strong interest in cemeteries, which may hint to deaths he may have had to deal with in the past.
READ THIS: Here’s what made Love Next Door great.
As with all soap operas, everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. Bae Seok-ryu’s explanation to Choi Seung-hyo that she was just tired and wanted to come home because of stress is possibly true, but I don’t buy it. Even if it’s true, we are still left with the mystery of her former fiance. What kind of man fell for her, and why did she leave him?
I am also looking forward to knowing more about how his family has helped shape Choi Seung-hyo into the man he is. The story that we know the least about and have no idea where it will go is Jeong Mo-eum the paramedic, and her stranger.
I may be wrong but I have a feeling that the diabetic drunk we met with Jeong Mo-eum is someone who will be important in the story.
Enjoy the Show.
