Soap vet Sean Kanan has co-authored a book on success! The tome contains personal anecdotes from many soap stars and other accomplished folks on what it takes to reach your goals. Read on to find out how you can win a signed copy of Success Factor X!
Kanan, who’s appeared as A.J. on General Hospital and as Deacon on The Bold And The Beautiful and The Young And The Restless, talked to Soap Hub about the book’s origins.
How did the idea for co-authoring a book on success come about?
Sean Kanan: I’d contributed to one of Jill Liberman’s books before. She called to wish me a happy birthday a while ago. By the time we’d gotten off the phone, we were writing partners. We felt everyone is interested in success.
Who are some of the people that contributed to the book?
We have business tycoons Mark Cuban (Shark Tank) and Sara Blakely (Spanx), the first female billionaire, Olympic gold medal athletes, baseball and football players. Daytime TV is well represented with contributors Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, All My Children), Steve Burton (Jason, GH), Antonio Sabato, Jr. (ex-Jagger, GH), Jennifer Finnigan (ex-Bridget, BB), Kimberlin Brown (Sheila, BB), and Kate Linder (Esther, YR).
I found out the common denominator that all these people have is that none of them define their success in terms of what they have [materialistically] but rather by their ability to inspire others, be of service, and help others fulfill what they want.
What did you learn about success in compiling these essays?
Steve [Burton] surprised me. He said that I was largely the impetus for him in becoming an entrepreneur. He talks about his grandfather, Jack, who was a door to door salesman. He’d have Steve sit down and write down what he wanted to accomplish each year.
What I learned from all the participants is that is you don’t quit. Keep going. Fall down seven times, get up eight. You may not be the top-scoring player on the team, but sooner or later the coach will put you in the game and you need to be prepared.
What do you hope the “walk away” for the reader is?
I hope readers will find something identifiable with one of the contributors and realize that anything is possible. Hopefully, the book will impress upon people the benefit of paying things forward.
You’ve been on every show currently airing but Days Of Our Lives. When are you coming back to soaps?
I love daytime and would be open to coming back if the situation were right. Fans have been vocal about Deacon coming back to YR or BB. It’d be great if that happened or if DAYS were to call. Then, I could say I’ve been on all four shows that are still on the air!
Kanan and Liberman will be doing a signing at the Barnes & Noble store at the Grove in Los Angeles on Monday, June 10 at 7 p.m. For more info, click here. To order your own copy of Success Factor X, click here.
