It started out as a daughter wanting payback against her mother, but it turned into one of the most memorable romances in soap opera history — the romance of Ross and Blake on Guiding Light!
Blake (Sherry Stringfield) wanted revenge against her meddling mother Holly, whom she blamed for costing her Alan-Michael Spaulding, so she set out to seduce the man her mom loved, Ross Marler (Jerry verDorn). Not exactly what you’d expect at the start of a great love story but that was the beauty of Guiding Light.
The Best Laid Plans
Blake seduced Ross and had wanted to time it so that Holly would walk in on them. But Blake didn’t count on falling for Ross for real. When Holly actually did catch the two, the fallout was horrible and Blake ran off. When she returned (now played by Liz Keifer), there was still so much to be said.
She confessed to Ross that she was in love with him while he was fighting to win a Senate seat. Ross won the election but gave up the gig (because Blake’s father, Roger, threatened to expose Blake’s dirty deeds with his opposition) so he could spend time with Blake.
Alas, he couldn’t commit to her, sending Blake back into the arms of her ex, Alan-Michael. Ross forgave Blake this transgression and the couple were married, surrounded by friends and family including Adam, Blake’s paternal grandfather.
Someone’s In The Kitchen
Ross and Blake’s marriage faced conflict when his daughter with Vanessa, Dinah, returned to Springfield. He had a blind spot where his child was concerned but Blake could see right through the mistress of manipulation. Family dynamics became more convoluted when Dinah took up with Roger while Ross’ ex, Amanda, returned to Springfield.
Double Trouble
A fling with Rick led Blake to believe that he’d fathered one of her twins (sons Kevin and Jason), prompting Ross to split from Blake. An even bigger threat to Blake and Ross was his half-brother, Ben Warren, a charmer who seduced Blake at every turn. Ben blackmailed Blake into bed by offering a tape that would help her pal Abigail be found innocent of a murder charge.
It Got Worse

Blake gave into her feelings for Ben and had sex with him. Distraught, she accidentally shot Ross and he was temporarily paralyzed. Ben produced some surprising news – Annie Dutton had rigged the paternity tests.
Ross was the father of both of Blake’s sons. Ross sued for custody but Ben got his sibling to admit in court that Blake was a good mother. Blake and Ross grew closer after Holly was revealed as the Nursery Rhyme Stalker!
Novel Idea
Ross discovered that Blake, now a novelist, was expecting and assumed another man was the father, but he agreed to take care of her and the baby anyway. A holiday miracle occurred when Blake went into labor and Ross learned the baby, a daughter, Clarissa, was his. They reunited and lived happily ever after…for a while.
Tory’s Story
A naïve Blake gave law student Tory Granger a makeover only to have Ross become smitten with her. Blake’s jealousy contributed to Ross’s fling with Tory. She faked her death and tried to kill Blake. Tory tried to drown Ross after she shot Blake, who was, fortunately, wearing a bulletproof vest. Tory was finally taken into custody!
Untimely End
Ross supported Blake following the death of her father and the appearance of Sebastian, Roger’s long-lost – and dangerous — son. Sadly, Blake and Ross’s love story met a tragic end after he was declared dead in a plane crash.
No survivors were reported, but there were also no bodies recovered. Guiding Light was cancelled before the show could ever tell a story of Ross’s resurrection. When the series concluded, Blake had continued to live her life and found happiness again with one of her ex-flames, Frank Cooper.
