Heroes and Villains. That’s what soaps are made of–although sometimes we get something that’s a little bit in between.

Some people find themselves hoping the villains never go, while still rooting for the heroes to win the day. It’s the ultimate battle of good vs. evil and no genre does them quite like soaps.

In fact, soaps started out as little morality plays, so that’s part of what makes these character types so popular.

Soap Hub asked you who you prefer–good characters or bad. And your answers showed you like to be entertained.

The Perfect Combination
Out of about 6,500 votes, 78% of you say you like a character who is a mix of good and bad. Those characters have always been around in the form of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) on All My Children and Dorian Lord (Robin Strasser) on One Life to Live.

Today, good and evil seems to exist in characters like Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) on General Hospital and Quinn Forrester (Rena Sofer) on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Neither have a squeaky clean past, but they will do ANYTHING for their kids and seem to want to make amends.

Pure and Perfect
A much smaller 19% of you want characters who are full of purity–even if purity doesn’t exist in many in this world. You at least want your soap characters to have that fantastical quality. And you find that purity in those like Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves) on Days of Our Lives and Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) on The Young and the Restless.

While those women have their demons, they never, ever set out to purposely hurt anyone.

Breaking Bad
The final 3% of you love a good bad guy (or gal) and you’ve had them through the years with Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) on DAYS, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) on Y&R, and Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) on GH. Bad is or was in their bones and you never wanted or want to see any of them go.
