Giving Thanks for Comic Relief on Our Soap Operas

With all the sturm and drang that happens daily on soap operas, it can be such a relief when a character can bring a little levity to the situation.

Luckily, soaps have always been able to provide that mix. Otherwise, too much sadness or intense drama can stop seeming like entertainment and bring the viewer down. Here’s a list of some of our favorites who know just how to make the most of their moments.

Days of Our Lives
Who can forget the adventures of Calliope and Eugene (along with Anna), especially when they went on the Newlywed Game.

Today, Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston) can always be counted on to give commentary on a situation that makes us laugh out loud, even if it goes over the heads of the people he’s talking with at the time. Watching him give advice to great-granddaughter Claire a few months ago had us smiling ear-to-ear.

The Young and the Restless
Those awesome Baldwin brothers, Michael and Kevin (Greg Rikaart), started out as bad boys and perhaps that put them in a good position to see life a little off-kilter. Who could blame them with a mom like Gloria?

They needed a razor-sharp wit to survive. Sort of like GC neighbor Jill, who was always in top form around Kay Chancellor and her maid, Esther.

General Hospital
Whether it’s Luke Spencer labeling the town Port Chuck or Port Chuckles or Tracy’s well-timed catty remarks, usually at Monica’s expense, this show has always known to bring the funny along with its high-stakes drama.

These days, Maxie (Kirsten Storms) knows just how to size up a situation and put someone – most recently Claudette – in their place. Her escapades into the zany with Spinelli were legendary.

The Bold and the Beautiful
Back in the early days of the show, you could always count on Sally Spectra to release a zinger at nemesis Stephanie Forrester, knocking the matriarch down a peg or two. Her able assistant Darla was a great sidekick in that department.

Now it’s Stephanie’s sister, Pam (Alley Mills), holding up the comedy torch with her snide remarks about Quinn or the fact she seems to think a lemon bar can solve all of life’s problems. And you know what? Sometimes they do.
