They’re called Daytime Dramas for a reason. Because they’re supposed to be dramatic. As in heart-wrenching. As in all crying all the time.
But soaps were also created almost 80 years ago, for a different audience than exists now. Today, fans can get serialized storytelling not only in the daytime, but in primetime, too.
And not just obvious soaps like Empire, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, and the upcoming Dynasty reboot, but even in sitcoms that continue the same storyline from week to week.
The Big Bang Theory is just as much about the couplings as it is about the laughs (and certainly much more than it is about science).
So 21st Century fans have gotten accustomed to lighter moments alongside their drama. Do you want to see that trend trickle down to daytime?
Drama-Rama-Ding-Dong!
If we wanted sitcoms, we’d watch sitcoms, sneer 65% of you. Sure, The Good Place, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Jane the Virgin might have ongoing stories as well as punchlines, but that’s not what you’re looking for when it comes to soaps.
A quip from Bill (Don Diamont) on The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) or Franco (Roger Howarth) on General Hospital (GH) is fine once in a while, but don’t you dare let it upstage the angst!
Save the Drama For Your Mama
Lighten up, counter 34%! There is just so much of Gabi (Camilla Banus) and Abby (Marci Miller) sniveling over Chad (Billy Flynn) that you can take on Days Of Our Lives (DOOL) before you’re desperate for a lighter moment (though Hattie and Bonnie’s “wacky” antics weren’t exactly what you had in mind).
At least, on The Young and the Restless (YR), whenever Victor (Eric Braeden) gets too pompous, there’s always Jack (Peter Bergman) to deflate his balloon!
