If there is one thing soap opera writers and producers know, it’s that you can’t please all of the people all of the time. No matter how popular a story, character, or actor is, there is someone, somewhere who hates it with a red-hot passion.
But, in the aggregate, was 2017 a good, bad, or average year for our soaps? Over 10,000 viewers let us know how they really felt.
It Was the Year That Was
Considering all the complaining that happens on message boards and other social media platforms, it’s a bit of a surprise that 78% of you voted in the affirmative, saying it was a good year for soaps, with many great storylines.
Days Of Our Lives (DOOL), especially, received praise as Most Improved towards the end of 2017.
Rerun City
On the other hand, 20% felt that even if the storylines were good, they were still reruns. How many times can Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) vacillate between Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) and Bill (Don Diamont) on The Bold and the Beautiful?
Two Jasons is one (two?) Jasons too many on General Hospital (GH). Been there, already seen it.
We Have Thoughts!
And then there was the 1% who had some very specific feedback. The sex-trafficking story on The Young and the Restless (YR) was a major dud, and fans felt like Hilary (Mishael Morgan) ate the show this year.
In addition, a general note was that soaps were going back too often to the well of revising past tales without moving forward. This is another surprise, as usually, the chief complaint is that soaps ignore their history in favor of today’s shiny new toy.
But, like we said up top, you can please all of the people all of the time and, in 2017, it would seem that BB, DAYS, GH, and YR did an above average job!
