There’s no soap opera without a trope! You’ve got your saccharine sweet good girl, your bad girl who just wants to be loved, reformed bad boys who live on the edge, lovelorn teens, meddling mamas, tyrannical tycoons, and ice queens dying to be thawed out.
We’ve all got our favorites, and it’s not like all character types are interchangeable. You may love ingenue Abby (Melissa Ordway) on The Young and the Restless, but not on Days of our Lives — or vice-versa.
You may forgive General Hospital’s Sonny (Maurice Benard) all his decades of crimes, but think The Bold and the Beautiful’s Bill (Don Diamont) ought to be tied up in front of a firing squad.
When it comes to rootability, though, who gets your sympathy more often than not? Almost 12,000 bleeding hearts shared their soap opera weakness.
Here He Comes To Save the Day!
It’s Underdog! Or, at least, underdogs are 88% of fans’ biggest weakness. Maybe that’s why BB’s Sally (Courtney Hope) was able to get away with corporate espionage — both with Thomas (Pierson Fodé) and the audience.
Sally had the Forresters and the Spencers against her — the spunky redhead deserved a break!
The same goes for perennial Y&R damsel in distress Sharon (Sharon Case) or DAYS’ unlucky in love Gabi (Camilla Banus). You can’t help but feel — and root — for them.
Good To Be Bad
On the other hand, 10% of you have had enough with namby-pamby good guys. They deserve everything they get for just sitting there and sobbing, “Woe is me,” instead of fighting back.
You’d rather root for the villains. At least they’re proactive. They’re doing something, taking their destiny into their own hands, and they deserve your support more.
Don’t Forget About….
Like the adult diaper, 2% of the audience says, “It depends.” You don’t vote a straight party ticket, you pick whom you’re going to root for — the bad guy or the good guy — based on the individual story’s merits.
