Seems every time we turn around, someone has pride in being something or other. But what about soap fans? Are they proud of their fandom? How do they express it? Over 4,000 of you told us how you felt.

Flying the Flag
No shyness here, as 75% of you declared yourselves not just proud, but VERY proud to be soap fans. And why shouldn’t you be? General Hospital (GH) just had a fan club weekend and many came out to meet their faves like Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) and William deVry (Julian).

If sci-fi, fantasy and comic-book fans proudly fill massive arenas with their conventions, not to mention guys who call themselves bronyes (that’s bros who are into My Little Pony), what do soap fans have to hide?

You’re a loyal bunch; some have watched your stories for half a century! You’re sensitive — who else would weep just as sincerely the cazillionth time Marlena (Deidre Hall) finds true love with John (Drake Hogestyn) on Days of Our Lives (DOOL) as you did the first?

And you’re fun! Those fan gatherings for The Young and the Restless (YR) can get rowdy — especially when Eric Braeden (Victor) greets the crowd! You absolutely should be proud!

It’s Just a Thing
Being a soap fan is something that 16% of you do, not what you are, and, as a result, you can’t see what there is to be proud about.

Do you see folks thumping their chests and announcing, “I am proud to watch The Big Bang Theory!” No. They watch, they enjoy, they move on. They don’t need a parade.

And neither do you, even if you were shocked as all get-out when Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) returned on The Bold and the Beautiful (BB).

A Soap Opera Secret
And then there’s the 8% of the audience which isn’t exactly embarrassed to be a soap fan, but you don’t go around advertising it, either. Mostly, it’s because you don’t know anyone else who shares your passion and feel weird talking about your day to day following of imaginary people’s love lives.

And the Rest
A tiny 1% wishes you could be proud, but your shows have been disappointing you lately. You want more romance (that lasts). You want better writing. Maybe then you’ll be ready to get loud and proud about your fandom.
