Soap Hub looks at the Hits and Misses for the week of June 9-13 in the worlds of Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless, and Beyond the Gates.

Top 10 Hits and Misses

10. MISS: There’s been a lot of talking, not a lot of doing (B&B). Friday’s episode, in particular, featured characters sitting around discussing what could happen or what they want to happen. We want to see things happen. That’s why we’re so excited for Jack Wagner’s return next week. He will help stir things up in a good way.

9. HIT: Damian gives Lily the perfect gift (Y&R). This was a small moment, but a good one. Damian (Jermaine Rivers) was nervous to give Lily (Christel Khalil) his gift, which was designed to show his appreciation for hiring him at Winters and not firing him. He gave Lily a History of Jazz book that he felt paid homage to her father. It was a touching, simple, and beautiful gift that held meaning for Lily.

8. MISS: Steve is retiring (DAYS). We get why Steve (Stephen Nichols) feels the need to shut down the Black Patch Detective Agency. He no longer has John as a partner. But it felt a bit like the end of another era. It was all so overwhelming to hear this during the week we were saying goodbye to John Black. However, there’s hope (pun intended). We were thankful that Bo (Peter Reckell) pitched himself and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) as potential future partners.

7. HIT: Mona and Kat team up (BTG). These two could make quite the crime-fighting duo. Kat (Colby Muhammad) enlisted Mona’s help to get Leslie’s (Trisha Mann-Grant) DNA. And it worked. Mona (Karan Kendrick) giving up on the sting when she knew their trap was successful was chef’s kiss. It gave Mona another opportunity to tell Leslie where to go. And Kat’s bagging of Leslie’s napkin and telling Jacob (Jibre Hordges) why this particular DNA find was admissible was fun, although probably not as fun for Jacob.

6. MISS: Kristina comes up wth a new plan (GH). Why can’t Kristina (Kate Mansi) let go of this Ava (Maura West) obsession? It has been going on for a while, and we were hoping that with her attempt to kill Ava backfiring spectacularly, she would accept that she got away with the crime and move on. Nope. Now she has hired Cody (Josh Kelly) to seduce Ava and create friction for her and Ric (Rick Hearst), thereby upending their blackmail scheme.

5. HIT: Finn, Poppy, and Li scenes. It’s not often that we get family scenes featuring Li (Naomi Matsuda), Poppy (Romy Park), and Finn (Tanner Novlan). It was necessary. They needed to talk about the Luna problem and getting her out of town. They may need to be more proactive in making that happen, though (B&B).

4. MISS: Derek pops the question to Ashley (BTG). Derek (Ben Gavin) and Ashley (Jen Jacob) couldn’t even figure out a way to live with each other. So, in what world is the next logical step for Derek to propose to his girlfriend? You know what getting married requires? For them to live together! Ashley wasn’t ready to give up her independence or her small apartment two seconds ago. If they do get engaged, what are the chances that this couple will make it to the altar?

3. HIT: Michael is Awarded Full Custody of the kids (GH). The judge awarding full custody was valid, but unexpected. It showed that the judge listened to the different arguments carefully. She broke it down methodically, and when she did, it was like, duh, of course this should have been the judgment. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call for Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), who went into full meltdown mode after hearing the decision.

2. MISS: Chelsea tries to negotiate with Victor (Y&R). The look on Chelsea’s (Melissa Claire Egan) face led us to believe that she truly knew Aristotle Dumas’s identity. On top of that, she thought she could use the intel to get Victor (Eric Braeden) to lay off Billy (Jason Thompson). But all she had was a hunch and a weak hunch at that. Because she didn’t vet the information. She thought her con artist background was enough. It wasn’t.

1. HIT: DAYS Says Goodbye to John Black (DAYS). The show did an amazing job honoring the loss of John Black and Drake Hogestyn. They rolled out a ton of flashbacks. Brought back many of the characters that meant the most to him. And the eulogies were emotionally heartbreaking and perfect. There was the garden flower recreation inspired by John and Marlena’s (Deidre Hall) 1999 wedding. Brady (Eric Martsolf) breaking down John’s iconic eyebrow, his single greatest asset. Paul’s (Christopher Sean) speech centered around their shared love of baseball. Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) showed up just in time for Bo to pay his respects to his brother. The stories flowed, and so did the tears. So many tears.

What are your hits and misses?

Honorable Mentions

B&B

MISS: Luna keeps showing up at Steffy and Finn’s. Last week, we asked why Finn and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) hadn’t turned their house into Fort Knox yet. Luna (Lisa Yamada) keeps showing up there so she can make her pleas to her father. What’s it going to take for them to up their security? And they need to do it sooner rather than later because Hayes is on her radar now.

BTG

HIT: Andre accidentally outs his relationship with Dani. Andre. (Sean Freeman) barged into Dani’s guest house, and instead of finding the woman of the house, he ran into her daughter and niece. Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Kat quickly got the picture. Dani (Karla Mosley) and Andre were together. It was an adorable moment and a hilarious one, especially when Chelsea and Kat put him on the spot and asked him if he had anything to share. We loved this development because it’s about time people start finding out about Dani and Andre. They’ve been under the radar for far too long.

DAYS

MISS: A few headscratchers. While John’s goodbye was wonderfully done, there were a few things about it that confused us. What happened to the reception for guests afterwards? It seemed like it happened, but we didn’t see it. Where were Will (Chandler Massey), Anna (Leann Hunley), and Tony (Thaao Penghlis)? Julie (Susan Seaforth-Hayes) was there pre-ceremony, and then she wasn’t there during the ceremony. We didn’t see Jack (Matthew Ashford) and Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) until afterwards, although there was a mention of them being there at one point, and we sawJack at Abigail’s grave. And…Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord) is ISA or something to that effect? How? Also, we still don’t know where Bo’s facility was located. None of these things took away from the occasion, however. They just made us wonder….

GH

HIT and MISS: Aidan goes traveling with Lucky. We’re happy that Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) will spend quality time with his son, Aidan (Colin Cassidy). But now this means, at least for the summer, that none of Elizabeth’s (Rebecca Herbst) kids are in Port Charles. Paging Jake (Hudson West). Can you come back, please? You, too, Cameron (William Lipton).

Y&R

HIT and MISS: Hello, Michael Swan. Mariah’s big work trip secret is playing out a bit too slowly. Everybody knows she’s hiding something. She has said as much. As ashamed as Mariah (Camryn Grimes) is, it’s not cool to keep such a huge thing from her wife. However, in flashbacks, the audience has learned it has something to do with an older man, played by Michael Swan. Swan used to play the dashing Scotsman Duncan McKechnie on As the World Turns. And it doesn’t escape our attention that CBS can again boast the talents of Swan and Beyond the Gates‘ Tamara Tunie (Anita), who played Jessica Griffin on ATWT. Jessica and Duncan were one of our favorite soap couples back in the day.
