Why Robert’s “Forced Retirement” Made Little Sense On General Hospital

It was a heartbreaking day Tuesday for longtime watchers of General Hospital as beloved super spy Robert Scorpio sat down with his brother (and family) to share the news that the WSB, the spy agency he’s worked for since before he joined the show in 1981, is forcing him to retire. But there was one problem.

As Robert (Tristan Rogers) was with Mac (John J. York), Felicia (Kristina Wagner), and her daughter Maxie (Kirsten Storms) when he shared the news about what the WSB had just done. Yet, with all their outrage, no one bothered to mention that the head of the WSB happens to be Frisco Jones (Jack Wagner)!

Yeah, that same Frisco who is Maxie’s biological father and Felicia’s ex-husband. You would think that just maybe one of the women would pick up their always keenly placed cell phones and dial up the guy to chastise him then and there for pushing his mentor out the door? We know we’d like to!

Yes, perhaps Robert isn’t as young as other agents but surely there would still be a place for him somewhere? Isn’t that what desk duty was made for? But that’s not really the point. Frisco shouldn’t be forgotten — especially by those who know him best, so why did the writers not deal with that element?

We aren’t saying that Robert shouldn’t retire. Frankly, that would free him up to move back to Port Charles for good and nothing would make those of us at Soap Hub happier than to have Rogers on contract and around permanently.

Heck, Mac seems to prefer being behind his own bar so let Robert take over as police commissioner, which would have him working closely with Laura (Genie Francis) — a woman he’s shared more than one adventure with back in the past when she was married to his BFF Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary).

We’d even be game for him providing competition for Kevin (Jon Lindstrom) if they think Anna (Finola Hughes) will be too busy fighting for Finn (Michael Easton) once Hayden (Rebecca Budig) returns to the scene. Hopefully, the show will remember that connection.

General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
