General Hospital star Matt Cohen has been melting hearts for the past few years in Port Charles. Now, the actor has a change in his status with the ABC soap and he wants fans to know about it!
The actor, who plays Dr. Griffin Munro, has told TV Insider that he’s leaving to embark on new projects. His next endeavor is to turn the short film he’s directed, Mama Bear, which is currently scooping up awards on the festival circuit, into a feature film!
“I need to give Griffin a little rest right now,” says Cohen, whose last airdate is set for Friday, March 22.
“I talked to Frank [Valentini, executive producer]. We’re leaving it very open-ended. There’s always the chance I’ll come back. I have a real family over there with the actors and especially the crew…”
While Griffin was revealed as the son of Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan), he didn’t get to work with Buchanan that much as Duke had been killed off prior to Cohen joining the show.
Fortunately, the two got to share some screen time when Duke appeared like an apparition.
Cohen had heard wonderful things about his TV dad from co-star Finola Hughes (Anna). “When Finola says somebody’s great, then somebody’s great,” the actor says. “Meeting Ian was spectacular. We only had a few minutes to work together. It was an honor to play [the son] of a legacy character who is so embedded in the show’s history.”
The actor, also known for his role as young John Winchester on Supernatural, wants everyone to know it’s in his nature to move on.

“I wasn’t bored with the writing or the storyline, but I’m bored if I don’t have an extreme challenge in front of me,” Cohen says.
“Maybe I’ll pop into GH every once in a while? That’ll be up to Frank and the writers as to what we do.”
Cohen has a big thank you to the fans who’ve supported him as Griffin and in his other roles.
“All gratitude to the fans,” he says. “I’ll be back either as a premonition, a return, in a dream, or a flashback. Who knows?
“But I will touch my feet on the GH set again. There’s too much love there for that not to happen.”
