In the end, he unknowingly got Marco killed by bringing Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) into his life, and having his son work alongside the double agent.
Sidwell hasn’t been the same since his son’s murder, and is obsessed with making the killer pay. It was pure emotion that convinced him that Lucas (Van Hansis) was the culprit, and shooting him was the act of a desperate man.

Sidwell cared for Lucas because Lucas loved Marco. The two men grieved together, which is why Jenz was distraught when Lucas betrayed him. In his mind, if Lucas could turn on him, he could have also killed Marco.
