It was “General Hospital” that ushered in the supercouple phenomenon back in the early 1980s and never looked back. While love and adventure have taken center stage ever since, there are some couples who stand out more than others.
Everyone has their faves and that includes Soap Hub. Here are our picks for the Top 5 GH Couples of All Time.
- Luke and Laura
With Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) starting the soap supercouple craze, it’s only fitting that we name them GH’s top couple. Luke and Laura saved the soap from near-certain cancellation and also became a pop culture phenomenon. Yes, their story started in a controversial manner on the Campus Disco floor, but their love then transcended the decades. They may have split and live apart now, but even when Luke left Port Charles last year, he left one last letter and of course it was to his “Angel”–Laura.
2. Jason and Sam
With a love story that’s lasted more than a decade, took a two-year-break when one half was presumed dead, and is now going stronger than ever with a recast Jason, how can “Jasam” not be considered a very close second to Luke and Laura (and we’re sure some may even consider them first)? Sam brought out a part of Jason that he lost after his first memory-loss car accident in 1996, showing him how to once again love completely. Even with a disappearance, a new face, and a new voice, the Jason (Billy Miller) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) connection remained, making them GH’s current top couple and one of its all time top 5, as well.
3. Duke and Anna

Mobster Duke (Ian Buchanan) and law enforcing Anna (Finola Hughes) have a love story that transcends time and death. Anna Devane was the police commissioner when she met club owner Duke Lavery, who she eventually learned was a mobster. However, Duke chose Anna before the mob very early on and turned his back to help her and Robert bring his bosses down. The pair married, but then Duke’s life came to an alleged tragic end in 1989. Decades later, Duke returned to PC alive and well in 2012 and he and Anna tried picking up right where they left off. In 2015, he was just about to leave mob life again to be with Anna only to be shot dead by Carlos Rivera. Anna has spent the last year grieving Duke and seeking justice, with many fans hoping Duke’s death was once again a ruse.
4. Sonny and Brenda
While Sonny (Maurice Benard) has had quite a few loves pass through his life since his time in Port Charles, the love he found with Brenda (Vanessa Marcil) never seemed to die no matter how many times they ended it, she was presumed dead, or they married others. The pair met when Brenda was barely out of high school and quickly fell in love. However, his life of crime often got in the way of their happiness. Brenda did eventually accept Sonny The Mobster, but he’d always leave her standing in the rain. While Brenda also had a romance with Jasper “Jax” Jacks, she did eventually marry Sonny two decades after they first met. Alas, the marriage didn’t work and both had to accept that they’d never be together, despite the love that was always there.
5. Robin and Patrick
Yes, Robin (Kimberly McCullough) had two other true loves before Patrick (namely, Stone and Jason), but it was this adult love that was meant to be. Robin and Patrick (Jason Thompson) brought out the best in each other, and even with Robin presumed dead and then Robin disappearing with Patrick nearly marrying others during those times, they still made their way back to each other. Robin and Patrick are still together today–albeit off screen–but at least we know they’re happily married once again raising daughter Emma.
