Everyone has their favorite couple on General Hospital. Sam’s with Drew. Liz is with Franco. Jason is with….well, despite the New Year’s Eve kiss with Sam, he’s not with anyone — yet.
Frank Valentini, GH’s executive producer, tells Soap Hub that viewers can count on twists and turns as couples stay together, break up, and make up in Port Charles.
“I’m really excited by what’s going on,” Valentini says. “[Head writers] Chris Van Etten and Shelly Altman have done a really wonderful job in creating an architect of story where we can have moments that are emotional and gratifying to the audience that has known and loved GH for 55 years.”
The exec adds that his talented writing team has also “set up a structure that allows us to move the story fast so that every day is important to see and every day is a must-see moment.”
In addition to Sam/Drew (Kelly Monaco/Billy Miller) and Liz/Franco (Becky Herbst/Roger Howarth) and Jason (Steve Burton), there’s also Kim (Tamara Braun) in the mix — the mother of Drew’s son Oscar (Garren Stitt). What roles Jason and Kim will play in these couples’ lives remains to be seen.
And, yes, while the writers have a plan, they also keep an eye on performances and see how they factor into storytelling.
“Even though there’s an inevitability in some aspects of the story you’re not sure how you’re going to get there,” Valentini adds. “And [there are] other aspects that don’t have a scripted or predictable inevitability. You’re excited to see what will happen.”
