Seeing General Hospital (GH) characters you know and love leave the show is never easy.
Goodbyes are hard, and some are worse than others — like when you disagree with the writer’s decision to pull the plug on a character you adore. No matter, fans have no choice but to accept things and move on.
In honor of those who have bid adieu to in Port Charles, here are the 5 General Hospital characters we miss most.
The Prince: Nikolas Cassadine
When contract negotiations between Tyler Christopher and GH fell apart, a role that had been temporarily recast came to a dramatic end: Nikolas was murdered.
Laura (Genie Frances) mourned the loss of a son and Spencer (Nicolas Bechtel) a father, while viewers mourned the loss of the prince of Port Charles and the best the Cassadine family ever had to offer.
The Rebel: Luke Spencer
You can’t blame a guy for retiring, but you don’t have to like it. Anthony Geary became synonymous with Luke Spencer, a role he played on and off from 1978 to 2015.
Ultimately, he opted to leave daytime and the U.S. to move to Denmark and enjoy his golden years. So Luke suffered a mental breakdown and then split Port Charles to focus on making himself whole. The move left a huge void on the soap.
The Son: Morgan Corinthos
After two daytime Emmy wins as Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series, Bryan Craig decided it was time to move on. So the GH scribes penned his dramatic exit as Morgan.
His bipolar disorder spun out of control, leading to his demise by a car bomb. The Corinthos family hasn’t been the same since the death of Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly’s (Laura Wright) sensitive yet impulsive son.
The Doctor: Alan Quartermaine
GH’s brash decision to have Alan (Stuart Damon) suffer a heart attack while held hostage at the Metro Court and subsequently die stunned viewers. No one saw the move coming, nor understood why.
His role at the hospital and marriage to Monica (Leslie Charleson) had been paramount to the show. Perhaps the powers that be saw the error of their ways, bringing Alan back as a ghost after his passing.
The Fireball: Tracy Quartermaine
Retirement reared its ugly head again when Jane Elliot decided to call it quits as Tracy in 2017. It was a major hit to the dwindling Quartermaines and put a definitive end to the love/hate relationship between sisters-in-law Tracy and Monica, and her mother/son bond with Ned (Wally Kurth) and Dillon (Robert Palmer Watkins).
Worst of all, fans knew it meant saying goodbye to a fiery formidable force the likes of which we’ll never see again.
