The soap community was stunned on Saturday as news of veteran soap actor John Callahan’s passing broke. The former queen of daytime herself, Susan Lucci, who played the actor’s on-screen sister-in-law on All My Children, didn’t learn the news till Sunday and shared her sadness and shock with her fans.
The woman who brought Erica Kane to life for the entire run of ABC the soap took to Instagram to pay tribute to her former co-star. Callahan, who played her on-again/off-again husband Dimitri’s (Michael Nader) brother Edmund from 1992-2005, passed away after suffering a massive stroke.
“What a shock—I just learned the very sad news of the passing of John Callahan! John played the beloved “Edmund Grey” on AMC—handsome, charming and adored by many,” she wrote in the caption next to an image of the late actor she shared.
“My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Eva [LaRue, ex-Maria] and their daughter. John left us way too early—I am so grateful I got to work with him—I will always remember that ever-present twinkle in his eye💙 RIP, John #evalarue #kayalarue. 🙏🙏🙏”
Susan Lucci has had her own health issues in recent years. Just over a year ago, the actress went on Good Morning America to talk with Amy Robach about chest pains she had experienced the previous October. “I thought it was nothing,” Lucci revealed. But after it happened a couple more times, she recalled hearing about signs of a heart attack.
It turned out that the star had two blocked arteries — one was 90% blocked while the other was 75% blocked. She quickly had two stents implanted and has since been very outspoken about women and heart disease.
Lucci and Callahan were last seen on TV together during a reunion for All My Children on Home & Family back on February 2, 2017. They reunited with many of their other co-stars, including his ex-wife LaRue and Peter Bergman (ex-Cliff) who recently celebrated 30 years on The Young and the Restless as Jack.
