Jason Morgan has given new meaning to the word selfless, since returning to Port Charles and General Hospital (GH).
The guy has lost his wife, his family, his penthouse, and a large chunk of his Quartermaine millions–yet, he’s willing to simply walk away from it all. Irking GH viewers the most has been Jason’s (Steve Burton) reluctance to engage twin Drew (Billy Miller) in a battle for Sam (Kelly Monaco).
Putting Up A Fight
How does Burton feel about Jason’s passiveness? As a guy, is it difficult to play? And how would he, personally, handle the Jason/Sam/Drew situation?
“I probably would fight harder in real life,” admits Burton, regarding Jason’s soulmate Sam. “But Jason is much more selfless. He’s always been that way. The main thing he wants is for Sam to be happy and for the kids to be safe. So he’s willing to be alone, if that’s the case.”
Fans Divided
Fans on both sides – Team Sam and Jason and Team Sam and Drew — have been very vocal about which couple they most want to see together.
It’s the kind of passionate controversy that soap writers and producers live for, because it means they have a plot – in this case, a triangle – that’s exceeding their expectations.
“I think it’s great that you have two couples that you can root for,” says Burton, who realizes it’s pure storyline gold. “As long as it doesn’t get dirty and nasty to people.”
Unfortunately, that has been the case with some rabid Sam and Drew fans going head-to-head with fervent Sam and Jason fans in a war of words over which twosome they want to see triumph. Some have even speculated about behind-the-scenes tension between Burton and Miller.
Co-Stars United
“I worked with Billy for over a year over at The Young and the Restless. Everybody wanted this, ‘Oh, they’re going to kill each other, when they see each other.’ Not even close,” insists Burton.
Burton, Monaco, and Miller are all on the same page about delivering the best storyline they can and calming the fires raging between their battling fan camps.
“We’ve talked about it,” shares Burton. “They posted something. I posted something. We don’t want people to be bullied or threatened for liking one couple or not – no matter who it is. This is just not the place for it. Sometimes I have to remind people that it’s just a TV show.”
